Islam is traditionally progressive. Islam broke early ground on women’s rights, worker’s rights, animal rights, environmentalism, inter-ethnic relationships, international relations and science. However, like all the major religions, Islam has struggled to adapt to the frenetic changes of the 21st century world and fundamentalism has emerged as a maladaptive response to modernity.

Fundamentalism directly opposes the traditional progressiveness of Islam. Fundamentalism looks to the past as a place for us to return. For fundamentalists, tradition is valued as the literal embodiment of a prehistoric ideal that is under existential threat from the excesses of modernity.

Muslim Collective also looks to the past, but for our community the past and tradition are a source of knowledge and inspiration to march the lofty ideals of Islam forward. We embrace the past and the future, not with fear but with hope and anticipation.

We come together as fellow humans, as Australians and as Muslims because we believe that it is the duty of each of us to contribute to making this world a better place. We strive for critical reflection and growth in our personal spiritual journeys, and within our communities.
We are dedicated to creating a vibrant, respectful space for Muslims who want to talk openly and honestly about their Islam- their beliefs, questions and ponderings- without fear of exclusion or judgement. We want to bring together Muslims and friends who share progressive values and are committed to improving society by engaging in issues on human rights, social justice and the environment.

There are three main principles that underpin the Muslim Collective:

Reason

The pursuit of knowledge through ijtihad (independent reasoning) is a duty of every Muslim. We encourage critical thinking and debate, affirming the right of each Muslim to determine their path, free from the imposition of any interpretation of Islam.
Indeed the worst of living creatures in God's sight are those that are deaf and dumb and do not use reason - Quran 8:22

Compassion

Our unwavering commitment to social justice and freedom from discrimination based on gender, religion, race, sexuality or ability is underpinned by compassion. We believe that compassion for humanity, creatures and the environment is a fundamental principle of Islam.
We have not sent you except as a mercy to the worlds — Quran 21:107

Progress

The Islamic values of equality, justice and reason are rooted in Islam's traditionally progressive nature. We are a forward thinking community engaged in building a future which embraces social progress that advances these values.
O mankind! Surely We have created you from a male and a female and made you tribes and families that you may know each other. Surely the noblest among you in the sight of God is he who is the most righteous of you- Quran 49:13
